What is the best way to bend copper tube?

  • During spring bending use a little lubricating oil or grease.

  • To prevent the copper tube snapping it is important to use the correct bending spring.

  • Use a bending machine, it forms a tighter bend.

There are two types of bending machine, adjustable and non-adjustable. Non-adjustable are usually cheaper, and weigh less so are more portable. But they can’t always cope with minor variations in dimensions and temper which can result in bends that are wrinkled on the inside and flattened on the outside.

The ‘adjustable’ machine can be adjusted to apply more pressure to the guide.

On non-adjustable machines pressure on the guide can be increased , and satisfactory bends achieved by inserting a thin piece of metal, such as a hack-saw blade, between the roller and guide.

When buying a non-adjustable machine make sure it is compatible with British tubing - UK sizes of half-hard (R250).

Maintain the machine properly - check for worn guides or formers.
