BS 9251:2005 Sprinkler systems for residential and domestic occupancies - Code of practice
This British Standard replaces the draft for development, DD251, which has been in use since April 2000.
BS 9251 makes recommendations for the design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of fire sprinkler systems for use specifically in residential and domestic occupancies. Copper, the professional installers' choice, is one of the pipework materials approved for use in sprinkler systems. The attributes that make copper so successful as a plumbing material also makes it an ideal material for life-safety fire sprinkler systems.
Much of the installation work will be familiar to qualified and experienced plumbing engineers, but the code does stress the importance of the system being designed and installed by experienced sprinkler contractors. It is important that, before embarking on this type of work, the plumbing engineer should attend training courses on sprinkler design and installation as part of his/her continuing professional development.
