Celebrity Tommy Walsh was so impressed with the southern heats of last year’s skills competitions that he decided to pop along to Barking and Dagenham College again this year to check out the quality and calibre of the 2011 candidates.

With temperatures soaring, in complete contrast to the weather 12 months ago, competitors in the SkillPLUMB heat battled it out for a place at the UK final taking place in the autumn. Held in tandem with SkillELECTRIC and SkillBuild, and utlising the superb facilities provided by the College, some of the very best plumbing apprentices went head to head with their peers over two days of intense competition.

As the final day unfolded and the tension mounted, Mr Walsh toured each event and spent a considerable amount of time in the SkillPLUMB arena, escorted by the hosts and SummitSkills’ head of skills competitions Neil Collishaw.

The day’s excitement culminated in a special joint awards ceremony in the great hall where a packed audience saw the winners receive their certificates and prizes from Barking and Dagenham College Principal Cathy Walsh.

The results were as follows:

Place Name Employer College
1st Ryan Pincott Pincott Plumbing & Construction   No college
2nd Robert Feekery Bretts Plumbing and Heating    Cambridge Regional College
3rd Kevin Sawyer AJS Services Ltd   Highbury College

Speaking of his win, Ryan said: "I almost couldn’t believe it – it was great hearing my name called out in first place. You have to work under a lot of pressure and to a very high standard so I’m really pleased that I was the best at the task.”
