Walsall College played host to the Midlands heat of the SkillPLUMB competition. Twenty year-old Sam Love took top spot…
| Place | Name | Employer | College |
| 1st | Sam Love | Property Care Partnership (part of Festival Housing Group | Worcester College |
| 2nd | Phillip Kempsell | KEJ Services | Bedford College |
| 3rd | Reece Bradley | Barclays Coalville Ltd | Stephenson College |
Sam, employed by Property Care Partnership (part of Festival Housing Group) and trained by Worcester College, beat ten other competitors to win first place in a challenging task to install a small central heating system. Judges awarded Sam with the most points against tough criteria including accuracy, quality of work and health & safety.
Speaking of his win, Sam said: "“I’m so pleased to have won. Before the competition I didn’t know how well I’d do, but my college, employer and family spurred me on and gave me the confidence to work to my best ability at the event, and luckily it paid off. I’m really grateful to have had the opportunity to take part.”
The competition has the UK Copper Board as its premier sponsor and is organised by SummitSkills. Neil Collishaw of SummitSkills said: “The quality of work from all competitors was very high and so Sam’s win is testament to his excellent attention to detail and knowledge of his trade. He’s certainly one of our industry’s rising stars.”
Sam might now go forward to a grand final in September where the highest scoring competitors from all heats will go head-to-head with peers from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and strive to be named the best in the UK.
