Make The Right Start
An Introduction to Plumbing Skills
The Board created Make The Right Start - An Introduction to Plumbing Skills in 1995 - designed to help teach basic copper plumbing skills to new entrants to the profession. This has since been updated and is now available to colleges on CD-ROM, making it even easier to use for both lecturers and their students.
Make
the Right Start has been developed with the help of Brian Curry
(see photo), formerly a plumbing lecturer at Oldham College. The CD pack has
been developed from this and is designed to be used either:
- on its own as a useful resource material to assist trainees with their college
studies
- or in conjunction with a new City and Guilds of London Institute Copper
Tube Advice and Installation Scheme, developed on behalf of the UK Copper
Board by Brian Curry.
The CD-ROM version of Make The Right Start is fully interactive. It includes CD video clips, exercises and work sheets developed to introduce trainees to the necessary skills to measure, cut, bend, joint and install copper tube and fittings to a high standard.
Reference materials covering pipe work bending and installation methods and a series of technical articles covering basic plumbing skills are included.
The author of Make The Right Start, Brian Curry, explains the benefits of putting the pack on to CD-ROM. 'This resource is now much easier to use. Everything is cross-referenced so you can read about pipe-bending, go directly to the video clip on this subject and then link into a list of questions on the topic.
'Access via computer means that students can cut and paste material from the CD directly into their own work, or print out exercises and reference material for their personal use.'
